Viburnum tinus

Viburnum tinus, more commonly known as laurustine, is a perennial shrub or tree native to the Mediterranean regions of Europe and Africa.  Lustrous, dark green, glossy leaves grow in an opposite pattern along the laurustine's branches, providing a bushy wall of living emerald.  Multitudes of creamy white flower clusters carrying a sweet, spicy fragrance dominate the plant when in bloom, with each individual flower sporting five waxy petals.  Following the enchanting blooms are mesmerizing metallic blue, berry-like fruits that transition to a deep violet as they ripen.  Though these berries are technically edible and not considered toxic, they should be avoided due to their tendency to cause intestinal discomfort.  Laurustine plants make excellent border shrubs in coastal gardens and landscapes as they have moderate salt and drought tolerance.  

For optimal growth, provide laurustine plants with a location that receives direct sun exposure throughout the majority of the day, though they are capable of growing in partially shaded areas as well.  Though they can grow in many types of well-draining soils, a fertile, humus-rich mixture is the ideal for laurustine plants.  Maintaining moist soil through regular waterings should allow these plants to thrive, though it is especially important to do so while they are becoming established.  However, laurustines are drought tolerant and can survive even when neglected for short periods of time.  Laurustine are not heavy feeders and can largely be left alone when planted in rich soil, but adding a layer of compost before flowering begins can encourage more profuse blooming.  Plant laurustine during the spring or fall by digging a hole that covers the root ball entirely and is at least twice as wide before filling with the desired soil.  Learn more in the Plant Story community!
