Trachelospermum jasminoides

Trachelospermum jasminoides, more commonly known as star jasmine, is a vining perennial evergreen native to Asia.  Though star jasmine comes from a different group of plants than the jasmine bush, its blooms carry a similar scent and attract bees equally well.  Clusters of petite, five-petalled blooms decorate these vining plants, which appear as a sea of white pinwheels.  Star jasmine has a fast growth rate, though it typically grows slower during its first year while still becoming established.  Most of the plant's energy is directed into developing a strong root system, including aerial roots, which are formed when the vine comes into contact with a wet surface.  As a vining plant, star jasmine makes an excellent trellis cover, capable of twining over vertical surfaces.  Alternatively, star jasmine can be used as a groundcover option in warmer climates, as they allow it to thrive year-round.  Harsh frosts will kill star jasmine plants, and they are only winter hardy in USDA zones 8-10.  

Provide star jasmine plants with a location that receives eight hours of sunlight daily to encourage their greatest blooming potential, though they can tolerate more shaded conditions as well.  Any well-draining soil mix is adequate for growing star jasmine, but they should be given plenty of ground space for their roots to spread across.  Keeping star jasmine's soil consistently moist is essential for its health, and only the top inch of soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings.  They typically require weekly watering, but extremely high temperatures and prolonged dry spells can increase their watering needs.  After becoming established, star jasmine can be fed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once in the early spring and again in the middle of summer.  Learn more in the Plant Story community!
