Tagetes erecta

Tagetes erecta, otherwise known as African Marigold, is an herbaceous annual native to Mexico.  Large round flowers in shades of yellow, orange, and creamy white float atop tall stems and fern-like foliage.  Bountiful aromatic flowers will provide a blanket of popping color to your lawn or garden, and they will not overcrowd their neighbors or spread to undesired places.  To take full advantage of their aromatic splendor, plant African Marigold along walkways as they will perfume the area with their pleasant scent as passersby brush against them.  The common name African Marigold comes from the plant's introduction to Europe via plant traders who brought the plant from African ports, though it is originally from Mexico.  It is important to note that African Marigold sap is mildly toxic to humans, and the plant should be handled with gloves.  

Preferring locations with continuous direct sunshine all day, it is best to plant African Marigolds in uncovered spaces.  Well-draining, rich soil will help new African Marigold plants grow quickly, but they are known to thrive in poor soil as well.   African Marigolds enjoy being watered in cycles that allow the soil to dry out between deep waterings, but the frequency should be increased during periods of intense heat.  There is little to no need for fertilizer when it comes to African Marigolds, unless they are growing in very poor soil, in which case a very diluted or minimal amount of slow-release fertilizer can be applied.  Pinching back young plants can promote bushier growth.  Though deadheading is not required for African Marigold, when dying blossoms are regularly removed, it can encourage continued profuse blooming.  African Marigold grow readily from seed, and can even be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost. They are also commonly available as starters from local nurseries.  Powdery mildew, botrytis, and leaf spot are infections that African Marigold are susceptible to, so make sure to watch for them.  Learn more in the Plant Story community!
