Strelitzia reginae

Strelitzia reginae, more commonly known as the Bird of Paradise, is a tropical perennial native to South Africa.  A plume of brilliant orange sepals and three bright blue petals emerge from a blue-green boat-shaped spathe, culminating in an appearance similar to a bird.  The Bird of Paradise plant gets its name from the specific bird it resembles, but the perspective envisioned is a bird of paradise in flight, with its colorful petals representing the feathers of open wings.  Sweeping silvery-green leaves resembling fan blades float atop long stems that grow out from the underground rhizome.  Though it usually blooms in the early winter or late spring, Bird of Paradise has been known to bloom throughout the year.  Blooming does not generally occur until the plant has matured for at least three years.  Bird of Paradise make great indoor or outdoor plants as long as there is enough space to accommodate their significant size.  

To ensure healthy blooming, the Bird of Paradise needs bright, diffused sunlight for at least six hours a day.  When growing indoors, place them in the light of a window that faces either east or west.  When growing outdoors, place them in a spot that is shielded from the direct midday sunlight, as it may scorch the younger growth.  Rich, well-draining potting mix or compost mix is ideal for the encouragement of healthy rhizome development.  Maintaining moist soil is crucial when growing Bird of Paradise plants.  While being careful to avoid waterlogging, water the plant daily during the spring and summer, as much of its moisture will be lost through its large leaves.  Brown, crunchy leaves signify that the plant is being overwatered, and the yellowing of the outer leaves will indicate the plant is being underwatered.  To promote healthy blooms, feed Bird of Paradise with compost at the beginning of spring, and then with fertilizer once per week during the growing season.  Blooms will last approximately three weeks before they begin dropping petals and withering.  Old and damaged parts of the plant can be freely removed.  If the plant is growing too large, cut the leaves back using clean implements in early spring, as the plant will handle trimming best while dormant.
