Sempervivum tectorum

Sempervivum tectorum, more commonly known as houseleek, is a perennial succulent native to the mountains of southern Europe.  These low-growing evergreen succulents form blankets of rubbery rosettes comprised of fleshy green pads with purple tips.  Towering flower stalks covered in squishy pink or green scales sport clusters of pinkish-mauve blooms that have spiky petals.  Houseleeks are commonly cultivated in the whole of Europe for their whimsical beauty and to follow a Roman tradition that claims they protect buildings from being struck by lightning.  The botanical name Sempervivum is a Latin phrase that translates to "live forever," referring to the budding offsets produced after flowering that make the plant appear to live forever.  Hardy by nature, houseleeks are often grown as a border in rock gardens, in crevices along stone walls, or even on top of homes.  

Unless planted in an extremely hot climate, houseleeks should be planted in a location that receives abundant sun exposure all day.  If you live in a high-heat area, consider planting them in a spot that is shaded from the harsh midday sun.  As is the case for most succulents, houseleeks need very well-draining soil.  Consider using a nutrient-poor, sandy soil mixture or a largely peat-based one.  Outside of extreme heat conditions, houseleeks should not require more water than rainfall provides.  When growing indoors, make sure to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.  Houseleeks are considerably tolerant of low temperatures but are not as heat-tolerant as other succulents, especially in USDA Zones above 8.  Fertilizing is not necessary with this plant, and it often thrives when neglected.  Learn more in the Plant Story community!
