Polyscias scutellaria

Polyscias scutellaria, more commonly known as shield aralia, is an evergreen perennial shrub or small tree native to the Southwest Pacific Islands.  Broad, rounded, fleshy leaves with thick, blunted serrations droop from short stems, often cracked and white along their edges.  Shield aralia produce a central stump with a light brown exterior and a flat top, with vertical branches growing out from the staff-like trunk.  Roots and leaves from the shield aralia have antiseptic and deodorizing effects, with the leaves commonly being shredded and added to packed meats and fish to conceal their odors.  Due to their need for consistently warm temperatures and their manageable growth rate, shield aralia make exquisite houseplants.  

Provide shield aralia with a location that receives bright, indirect sunlight, though some direct morning sun exposure is also safe.  Only intense midday heat leads to scorching, so ensure they are provided some partial shade if planted outdoors.  Shield aralia have highly rot-sensitive roots and require extremely well-draining, rich soils to thrive.  Ideally, shield aralia should be kept in an unglazed clay or terracotta pot to assist in removing excess moisture.  Deep waterings with enough time between each to allow the soil to nearly dry out completely is the schedule to aim for.  This is usually once weekly, with a decrease in frequency during the winter months.  Temperature and humidity are the most important factors when growing a shield aralia.  Ensure they are kept away from cold air currents and provided with a wet pebbly tray or humidifier.  During the growing season, fertilize with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month, especially if leaves begin to drop or turn a yellowish-green color.
