Polyscias fruticosa

Polyscias fruticosa, more commonly referred to as Ming aralia, is an evergreen perennial shrub or small tree native to India.  Feathery, fern-like foliage drapes gracefully across the numerous vertical branches, like a sea of green clouds atop an eruption of light brown fingers.  Ming aralia are exquisite houseplants that add a truly unique aesthetic to their surroundings.  Alternatively, Ming aralia can be grown outdoors as spectacular ornamental shrubs or standalone trees in areas that experience mild winters.  As all parts of Ming aralia are toxic, they should be kept out of the reach of children and pets.  

Provide Ming aralia with a location that receives bright, indirect sunlight, though some direct morning sun exposure is also safe. Only intense midday heat leads to scorching, so ensure they are provided some partial shade if planted outdoors.  Ming aralia have very rot-sensitive roots and require extremely well-draining, rich soils to thrive.  Ideally, Ming aralia should be kept in an unglazed clay or terracotta pot to assist in removing excess moisture.  Deep waterings with enough time between each to allow the soil to nearly dry out completely is the schedule to aim for.  This is usually once weekly, with a decrease in frequency during the winter months.  Temperature and humidity are the most important factors when growing a Ming aralia.  Ensure they are kept away from cold air currents and provided with a wet pebbly tray or humidifier.  During the growing season, fertilize with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month, especially if leaves begin to drop or turn a yellowish-green color.  Learn more in the Plant Story community!
