Polygonum aviculare

Polygonum aviculare, more commonly known as knotgrass, is a herbaceous annual groundcover plant native to a wide range of Eurasia.  Often found in abandoned fields and wastelands, the weedy plants are fast spreading and produce a substantial number of seeds.  Low-growing, semi-vertical, segmented stems are adorned with short, blade-like leaves, both being a similar shade of dull green.  Greenish-white or pink, star-shaped blooms with bright yellow stamens grow directly out from the stems, thoroughly covering their thin form.  Knotgrass has been eaten for thousands of years, with its most popular current use being an ingredient in soups and hot pots in Vietnam.  

Preferring a bit of shade, provide knotgrass with a location that is protected from the midday sun, especially in warmer climates where the plant is susceptible to scorching.  Any well-draining soil should be adequate for this weedy plant, though a rich mixture should encourage more robust growth.  Water frequently to maintain an evenly moist soil, as this should keep knotgrass from drying out and allow it to spread readily.  Temperate climates often allow for more moisture to remain in the soil, reducing the likelihood of scorching the plants' delicate foliage.  Feeding is not necessary when growing knotgrass, though amending the soil with a bit of compost between crops may improve the growth rate.  Learn more in the Plant Story community!
