Pittosporum undulatum

Pittosporum undulatum, more commonly known as the Victorian box tree, is an evergreen perennial shrub or tree native to southeastern Australia.  Thin, wavy-edged, dark green leaves grow in groups at the apex of the Victorian box tree's branches, with a glossy sheen.  Creamy white blooms carrying a citrusy-orange fragrance decorate the tree in the spring and summer, slowly fading to dingy yellow as they age.  Following the flowers, amber-colored woody fruits that resemble miniature oranges adorn the branches for several months, like peculiar ornaments.  Victorian box trees are considered highly invasive in many areas, including South Africa, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and southern Brazil, and should only be planted where they are not outlawed.  

Provide Victorian box trees with a location that receives copious amounts of direct sunlight for optimal growth, though they can tolerate some shade and even grow under the outskirts of larger canopies.  Most well-draining soils are adequate for growing Victorian box trees, though nutrient-rich soils are ideal.  Victorian box trees are drought tolerant, but will benefit from deep waterings during the summer months and when still becoming established.  Most climates are accommodating to Victorian box trees, with a tolerance for freezing and scorching temperatures alike, though they do have their limits. Not being heavy feeders, Victorian box trees planted in rich soil do not require feeding, though they can be given a layer of compost at the beginning of spring while still young.  Learn more in the Plant Story community!
