Pilea peperomioides

Pilea peperomioides, also known as the Chinese money plant, or coin plant, is a popular houseplant due to its characteristic coin-shaped, green leaves.  Being a very low-maintenance plant, the coin plant is perfect for a new plant parent looking to add some vibrance to their home.  The coin plant is native to the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southern China, commonly found growing around the base of the Himalayan mountains.  While the coin plant is mostly desired for its unique foliage, it also produces small white flowers in the spring.  This attractive foliage plant brightens up any area and is said to encourage good-fortune and prosperity.

The most important factor when potting the coin plant is drainage.  The soil needs to be well-draining and the pot needs drain holes.  The best soil to use is a peat or coir based, rich organic potting mix.  You can also add some perlite to the potting mix if it is not draining well enough.  The light should be moderate to bright indirect light, and needs to be rotated regularly to ensure symmetrical growth.  The coin plant has moderate water needs, so allow the soil to dry completely between watering.  The coin plant is comfortable at average home temperatures and humidity, and is semi-resilient to freezing.  The coin plant is very easy to propagate, after an offshoot is a few inches tall it will be ready to separate.  Dig gently under the offshoot and cut the main root one to two inches below the soil, and immediately plant it into moist soil.
