Mangifera indica

Mangifera indica, more commonly known as the mango tree, is a perennial fruiting tree believed to originate from around northwestern Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India.  With extensive varieties of mango trees, there are a wide range of sizes and unique growth habits, with most forming a dense canopy of pointed, oblong, deep-green foliage.  Mango trees can be anywhere from a 6 ft / 1.8 m tall dwarf, to a towering 100 ft / 30 m tall giant, and have even been reported to grow as wide as 3.8 ft / 1.1 m.  
When provided the correct conditions, even some potted mango trees are capable of producing panicles of petite, ethereal-white and red blooms.  Following the flowers are the prized mango fruit, appearing in a range of colors including reds, yellows, oranges, and greens.  One note of import is that the mango tree's sap, leaves, bark, and fruit skin can be toxic, and should not be consumed.  

Provide mango trees with a location that receives copious amount of sunlight for at least eight hours per day, as they will not flower or fruit as well without it.  If kept indoors, it is recommended to provide them with a sunny south-facing window.  Well-draining, sandy, loamy soils are ideal for growing mango trees, as they prefer a light medium.  For optimal fruit production, deeply water mango trees when the top few inches of soil have dried out.  However, never waterlog the soil or leave it in standing water.  High humidity and warm temperatures are best for growing mango trees, and they will need to be misted regularly if kept indoors.  Near-freezing temperature may cause a dropping of blooms and fruit, and frosts can kill young plants quickly.
