Lysimachia nummularia

Lysimachia nummularia, more commonly known as creeping Jenny,  is a perennial groundcover plant native to Europe and western Asia.  Petite, coin-shaped, dark or light green leaves grow in an opposite pattern along vine-like creeping stems.  When grown as a hanging plant, the creeping Jenny's gorgeous foliage will be fully on display, presenting as a multitude of sweeping strings with dangling shiny green coins.  Vibrant yellow, petite, cup-shaped flowers speckled with tiny red dots bloom near the end of spring, but will not last long.  Creeping Jenny is a beautiful ornamental plant, but it can quickly dominate lawns and gardens.  Take measures to keep its spread under control, otherwise it may become a significant nuisance.

The creeping Jenny's foliage color is determined by the amount of sunshine the plant receives; golden yellow leaves develop in the presence of abundant sunshine, and a deep chartreuse can be seen when grown in shade.  Any well-draining potting soil or garden mix should provide all the necessary nutrients that creeping Jenny plants need.  Water creeping Jenny frequently, as they need consistently moist soil to thrive, especially during periods of prolonged heat.  Once creeping Jenny is established, it can be sparingly fed with a 10-10-10 fertilizer at the beginning of spring.  To propagate creeping Jenny, dip out a small portion of its rhizome from an established patch that has a stem and roots attached, then replant it in a pot of moist soil.
