Loropetalum chinense

Loropetalum chinense, more commonly known as Chinese fringe flower, is an evergreen broadleaf shrub native to parts of Asia.  Often grown for their unique blooms, fringe flower plants produce either white or pink, subtly fragrant flowers with finger-like petals that have variable density.  Fringe flower plants are also revered for their remarkable foliage, which changes from a deep-green to a purplish-burgundy as it matures.  On account of its dense, bushy growth habit,  this plant makes an exquisite privacy hedge when planted as a border, especially with its variable color mottling and beautiful blooms.  Alternatively, the fast growth rate of fringe flower plants allows them to be crafted as topiaries and can provide a pleasant contrast when paired with predominately green-leafed plants.  Aside from some mild stomach discomfort, fringe flower plants are entirely non-toxic and safe to keep around pets and children.  

Provide fringe flower plants with a location that receives some shade during the middle of the day, as they handle those intense rays rather poorly.  Rich, well-draining, loamy soil with an acidic pH is ideal for growing fringe flower plants and benefits from the presence of a few inches of mulch around the plant's base.  Consistent moisture is required for young fringe flower plants, and they will need to be deeply watered 1-2 times per week.  After they have become established, fringe flower plants will be largely drought tolerant, but will still benefit from not being completely dried out regularly.  Fringe flower plants fair best in USDA zones 7-10, but may require a location sheltered from the harsh winter winds in extremely cold environments.  Feed fringe flower plants by mixing compost into the soil at the time of planting.  When planted in rich soil, these plants should not require additional enrichment but can be fed with an all-purpose, slow-release fertilizer.  Learn more in the Plant Story community!
