Gerbera

Gerbera, more commonly known as the transvaal daisy, is a semi-evergreen herbaceous perennial native to South Africa.  Though they are prized for their blooms, transvaal daisies also sport comely foliage, having lobed or toothy, leathery leaf blades that complement the exquisite blooms.  Single, double, and spider-flower transvaal daisy varieties are available, all of which provide large flowerheads of incredibly vibrant colors, whose petals point outward like rays of sunlight.  Transvaal daisies are a great addition to gardens in need of a pop of color, as their blooms persist from the beginning of summer through the fall.  Being native to South Africa, transvaal daisies are not very cold-hardy and will often die as annuals in areas subjected to harsh winters.  This lack of constitution makes them particularly difficult to grow from seed outside of warmer climates, as they often require a year of growth to bloom.  Harvest the flowers when they have fully opened but while their centers remain tightly packed for the best arrangement presentation.  Transvaal daisies are nontoxic and can be planted without the need for safety precautions.  

Provide transvaal daisies with a location that receives at least six hours of daily sun exposure and is close to a wall or other warmth-reflecting surface.  Transvaal daisies may be scorched if exposed to the harsh midday sun, and benefit greatly from having overhead coverage.  Well-drained soil with a high concentration of organic matter is ideal for growing transvaal daisies, with maintaining an acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5 being optimal.  Chlorosis can develop if the soil's pH exceeds that range, and black spots may appear if it falls below it.  Water weekly during temperate weather, always allowing enough time for the top inch of soil to dry out.  Increased watering frequency may be required in particularly dry or hot conditions, with the opposite being true during the plant's winter dormancy.  Feed transvaal daisies with a water-soluble fertilizer once per month during the growing season to promote continued blooming, though the dosage should be moderated based on the soil's richness.  Learn more in the Plant Story community!
