Buxus sempervirens

Buxus Sempervirens, also known as Boxwood, is an evergreen small shrub. It has light green flowers and brown tripod fruit. Its flowers usually bloom in April, and fruits will ripen in July. Boxwood has thick leaves with fine gloss, being widely arranged around lawns, buildings, roadside, gardens and so on. 
Boxwood has strong resistance to toxic gas and smoke. It is an important plant grown in factories or mines, thus can purify the environment. Boxwood prefers warm or humid climate, and it can also adapt to cold or drought. It needs fertile and well-drainage soil. Boxwood is a shallow-root tree, growing relatively slowly but has a rather long life. 
Cutting propagation can be carried out in early autumn when the leaf is still green. If you want to raise it in spring, you may wait until the over-winter branches turn brown into green, thus can improve the survival of new root. Remember to remain some soil around the cutting branches. And it is worth noticing that plant hormones can also help the roots grow faster. 
The fruit of Boxwood matures in August. It is easy to crack and will scatter many seeds. The brown fruit tip is the symbol of maturity. You may pick up the fruit in time, and then put it indoor to collect the cracked seeds. 
You can choose the seed with a glossy coat, which indicated a high quality. The seed is not resistant to drought, and you can store it in low temperature with mixed moist sand. It is recommended to sow the seeds before winter. 
Sowing is generally carried out in late October to early November. Bury the seeds with 2 cm soil and cover a plastic film to prevent freezing in winter. In the middle of March, you can timely spray some water to help seedlings coming out. When the seedlings grow to 6-7 cm, they can be transplanted for further cultivation. 
Boxwood has thick and dark green leaves, which will not withered in winter. Its shiny leaves are as small as bean, having a high ornamental value. Boxwood grows slowly, but it has dense and hard wood, so it can be used as an ideal carving material. People can make some art products by this wood. Its stem can be used to treat toothache and fall injury.
